Malaysia's National Transformation Programme 2017 noted that the country was eyeing to generate hospital revenue of MYR2.8 bn by 2020, with target markets of Indonesia, Myanmar, China and Vietnam. Malaysia has been recognised as the Health & Medical Tourism Destination of the Year for three consecutive years.

In 2017, hospital revenue stood at MYR1.3 bn, from one million healthcare travellers. This is expected to increase in tandem with the 2020 target.
It is expected that total exports for medical devices will reach MYR18 bn in 2020 from RM11 bn in 2017.
